An outbreak of Ebola virus disease (EVD), caused by the Bundibugyo virus species, has recently been reported in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), with additional cases detected in neighbouring Uganda. Local and international public health authorities, including the World Health Organization (WHO), Africa Centres for Disease Prevention and Control (Africa CDC), European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), and national health agencies, are actively monitoring and responding to the situation.

EVD is a severe viral haemorrhagic disease transmitted through close contact with infected bodily fluids or infected animals. The current outbreak is occurring in a region facing significant healthcare and logistical challenges, which may complicate containment efforts. At present, there is no indication of increased risk to Sweden, and Swedish authorities continue to assess the overall risk as very low. Swedish and international public health authorities continue to assess developments and provide updated guidance as needed. More information regarding the current outbreak is available from Africa CDC, ECDC, CDC, and Folkhälsomyndigheten (FoHM).

The Swedish Pathogens Portal and Pandemic Laboratory Preparedness (PLP) program at SciLifeLab are following the situation. Relevant updates will be provided through the portal when appropriate.
