The latest editorial, written by Eva Garmendia (Project Coordinator at the Uppsala Antibiotic Center, Uppsala University), is entitled “Antibiotic resistance does not recognise disciplinary borders: The Uppsala Antibiotic Center’s approach to research and education”. It discusses antibiotic resistance is a complex, borderless challenge that cannot be addressed by any single discipline working alone. It argues that meaningful progress depends not only on scientific advances, but on sustained collaboration across clinical, technical, social, and environmental domains.
This editorial focuses on Uppsala Antibiotic Center (UAC)’s efforts to create a sustainable community working towards addressing antibiotic resistance. UAC positions itself as a shared space where diverse expertise can converge to enable broader, more impactful questions to be asked and answered. UAC sees education as central to their efforts, as it equips early-career researchers with systems thinking and cross-disciplinary fluency. Ultimately, the intent is to cultivate a durable, intellectually open community capable of managing antibiotic resistance through collective responsibility and integrated knowledge.
The Uppsala Antibiotic Days (the bi-annual international conference organised by UAC) are scheduled to occur 15th-16th June, 2026. The conference brings together researchers, clinicians, policymakers, and industry experts to discuss antibiotic resistane. It is designed to offer time and space for dialogue, reflection, and new connections. If you work with antibiotic resistance and are looking for a community that grows with you, this is an invitation. The author encourages you to take part, to contribute, and to help shape how the field moves forward.
