New Pathogens Portal Nodes launched by Hungary and Mexico
Published: 2025-11-27
Pathogen Portal Nodes (PPNs) have now been launched in Hungary and Mexico. Both portals made use of the using the PPN Toolbox (developed as part of the Pathogen Data Network (PDN), funded by NIH (award number U24AI183840)). The Mexican node also received seed funding from the PDN to support their launch. As with all PPNs, these nodes support pandemic preparedness and infectious disease surveillance by providing access to high-quality data, tools, and resources tailored to their respective countries. The nodes will all become increasingly interconnected, together with the central Pathogens Portal, to maximise global pandemic preparedness.
The Hungarian Pathogens Portal offers access to a wide range of datasets, services, and tools related to pandemic preparedness. It is designed to serve researchers, clinicians, and policymakers by providing access to an extensive collection of biomolecular data on pathogens. The portal will also serve as the main access point for the Hungarian Pathogen Data Hub, enabling secure, controlled sharing of pathogen data and their associated clinical/epidemiological metadata.
The Mexican Node is hosted by the Biotechnology Institute at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) and is supported by the Swiss Institute of Bioinformatics (SIB). This initiative builds on the foundation laid by the CoViGen-Mex consortium, which played a central role in genomic surveillance during the COVID-19 pandemic. The Mexican node continues this effort by monitoring pathogens such as SARS-CoV-2, dengue, influenza, RSV, and Mpox, as well as wastewater surveillance. The portal provides up-to-date data, analytical tools, and resources to support the scientific community, health sector, decision-makers, and media in disease surveillance and response.
