Comparison of the existing portal with the beta version.

The Swedish Pathogens Portal aims to make research resources related to infectious disease and pandemic preparedness as Open and FAIR as possible. In the 6 years since its launch, it has proven a valuable resource for the research community. Close collaboration with that community has been key to this success, as the portal was able to adapt to their needs over time.

Recent community engagement efforts (e.g. a recent survey) have reflected the need for new and improved features on the portal. Some of the needs identified were; easier access to data, more advanced data visualisations, and greater support with data submission.

The Swedish Pathogens Portal needed to be redesigned in a new software in order to effectively meet the current and future needs of the associated research community. A beta version of the new design has now been made available for testing and feedback. Later in the year, following iterative improvements, this new design will replace the existing version entirely.

Liane Hughes, project leader for the Swedish Pathogens Portal says ‘We’re really excited to be able to support the extensive pandemic preparedness research efforts in Sweden. In the coming months, we’ll be collecting community feedback on the new, beta version of the portal. This will allow for iterative improvements, which will be completed alongside the development of new resources.’

There are multiple major changes in the initial beta version compared to the existing portal. For example, major improvements have been made to the wastewater dashboard, thanks to close collaboration with Anna Székely’s group at Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet (SLU). Information in the portal related to data management has also been streamlined, and the interface has been modified to improve usability.

In the coming months, the beta version of the portal will be continuously improved according to feedback, and new resources will be built in collaboration with researchers and research institutions. Users are encouraged to explore the beta version of the portal, and to reach out with any suggestions. The portal will also actively reach out for structured feedback over time.

Other improvements are planned to enable users to access more data on the portal and to offer new resources, so stay tuned to keep up to date the latest developments.
